Il sogno dei giovani americani degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, immortalato dal film cult American Graffiti di George Lucas, compie 40 anni. Il film, che spinse un manipolo di giovani attori sulla strada che portava all'Olimpo delle celebrità (Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Harrison Ford), debuttò in Usa il 1 agosto e il giorno dopo fu presentato al Festival di Locarno. Ottenne incassi straordinari, vinse il Golden Globe e conquistò 5 nomination all'Oscar. Indimenticabile la colonna sonora.

Oltre 60 versioni (delle 200 esistenti) cantate in tutti i modi ed in molte lingue di uno dei brani tradizionali più famosi del mondo. La prima versione incisa  è del 1953 cantata da un folker americano di nome Cisco Houston con il titolo di Stewball, poi ripresa negli anni '60 da molti artisti tra i quali Joan Baez. Ma la consacrazione vera e proprio è del 1971 con la versione di John Lennon e Yoko Ono, intitolata Happy Xmas (war is over). Gli stessi si prendono la titolarità del brano dichiarandosene autori. In questa raccolta trovate sia le prime versioni (stewball) sia quelle successive. Poche le versioni italiane tra le quali una molto rara di Jonathan e Michelle dal titolo Cavallino Bianco. Non le ascolterete tutte, ma avrete disponibile una raccolta importante.

Pubblichiamo questa raccolta che esce dagli schemi di questo sito, che di massima, si occupa di musica italiana. Ma trattandosi di un grande ed unico evento lo ricordiamo. Originariamente edito su Atlantic Records come un insieme di 3 LP nel 1970, è stato ri-pubblicato come doppio CD nel 1994.  Registrato dal vivo al festival di Woodstock che si svolse a Bethel, una piccola città rurale nello stato di New York, dal 15 agosto al 18 agosto del 1969, all'apice della diffusione della cultura hippy, che voleva riunire i giovani con un “3 Days Of Peace And Music”.  Fu l'ultima grande manifestazione del movimento che da allora si diffuse peraltro sempre più fuori dagli Stati Uniti, dove era nato, pur senza la coesione e l'originalità che avevano permesso negli anni sessanta eventi come il Monterey Pop festival, la Summer of Love a San Francisco e, appunto, il festival di Woodstock a cui oltre parteciparono 500.000 persone.

Strappo alla regola e pubblichiamo questo doppio cd con i partecipanti a questa strana manifestazione. Vista alla televisione è stato uno spettacolo.  Tipo il festival europeo del circo. Proprio di tutto. Non dico nulla sui costi dello splendido impianto fatto apposta per questa manifestazione. In un paese che non stà troppo bene. Per la cronaca ha vinto la Svezia, ben felice di ospitare l'anno prossimo il festival. Non ha problemi. Cosi si dice. Adesso voi ascoltate la musica dal mondo! Tutta cultura!!!!
